Will the top 1% own more than 50% of personal wealth in the US before 2040?

TL;DR

I estimate a 7% chance that this resolves YES. Trend continuation does not get close: the current WID/OWID value is 34.78% in 2024, and the all-time high in the current WID-based series is 48.67% in 1929 (OWID/WID data page ()). The main YES path is a future WID revision that moves the late-1920s peak above 50%, not a normal rise by 2039.

Context

The resolution source is WID, or a direct successor using substantially equivalent methodology. The current WID-based OWID page defines the indicator as the share of total household net wealth owned by the richest 1%, with wealth equal to household financial and non-financial assets minus debts; it says the data use the Mixed Income Capitalization-Survey method, were last updated on June 18, 2026, cover 1800-2024, and are in percent units (OWID/WID data page ()).

WID is the right source but not a fixed measurement instrument. WID says it combines national accounts, survey data, fiscal data, and wealth rankings, and says its series are continuously updated as raw data and methods improve (WID methodology ). That matters because the current WID value is far below 50%, while the current WID historical peak is close enough that a revision could decide the question.

Evidence

The historical backbone is the WID 2026 series mirrored by OWID. It has 117 observations for the United States, with sparse points before 1913 and annual observations from 1913 through 2024; the unit is percent of total household net wealth, the latest observation is 34.78% in 2024, and the current-series maximum is 48.67% in 1929 (OWID/WID data page ()).

From 34.78% in 2024, the series needs just over 15.22 percentage points to exceed 50.000% by 2039. The required pace is:

percentage points per year, where 15 is the number of calendar years from 2024 through 2039. In ratio terms, the top-1%-to-rest wealth ratio must move from $34.78 / 65.22 = 0.533$ to above 1.000, which requires about 88% cumulative relative outperformance, or about 4.3% per year for 15 years. These calculations use the latest WID/OWID 2024 value (OWID/WID data page ()).

The historical speed check is harsh. In the annual WID record from 1913 to 2024, the largest rise from any starting year to any later year within the next 15 years is 12.11 percentage points, from 36.56% in 1923 to 48.67% in 1929; the event now needs 15.22 points from a lower starting value. A linear trend fitted to the full modern upswing from 1978 to 2024 projects 42.2% for 2039, and a trend fitted from 1989 to 2024 projects 40.1%. These are my calculations from the WID/OWID history above, not official WID forecasts.

The Federal Reserve data are a useful cross-check, though they are not the resolution source. The Fed/FRED Distributional Financial Accounts top-1% net-worth series was 31.6% in 2026:Q1, was updated on June 18, 2026, and is a quarterly, not seasonally adjusted percent-of-aggregate series (FRED WFRBST01134 ). The same Fed framework says the top 1% held 50.2% of corporate equities and mutual fund shares in 2026:Q1, but only 13.3% of real estate in 2026:Q1 (FRED equities series ; FRED real-estate series ). This explains why a stock-market boom alone does not mechanically put total wealth over 50%: housing and other broader assets still make up a large denominator.

The strongest YES evidence is measurement risk. A 2020 working paper reproducing Saez and Zucman 2016 data says that their top-1% household wealth share peaked at 51.4% in 1928 and reached 41.8% in 2012 (Oviedo Moguel 2020, citing Saez and Zucman 2016 ). That is not the current WID series, so it does not already resolve the question. It does show that a closely related capitalization-style estimate has crossed the threshold before, and the current WID 1929 value is only 1.33 points short.

The recent measurement literature cuts against treating that old estimate as decisive. A Federal Reserve review says the United States has no representative administrative wealth data, so estimates rely on survey or capitalization methods; it also says newer capitalization models and DFA-style estimates show more muted growth than the baseline Saez-Zucman capitalization estimates (Federal Reserve FEDS Note (federalreserve.gov)). I read this as two-sided: future revisions are plausible, but the mainstream direction since the original high Saez-Zucman series has not been a clean move upward.

My decomposition is: 2% for an actual 2025-2039 WID-style value crossing 50% because of an extreme AI/equity/private-business concentration regime or a severe bottom-99% wealth shock; 5% for a historical or methodological revision, mainly to 1928-1929, crossing 50%; and less than 1% for successor or publication edge cases. Combining those overlapping paths gives a final estimate of 7%.

What's non-obvious

The obvious read is that the current value is around one-third, so the answer should be near zero. That misses the revision clause. The current WID 1929 value is 48.67%, and a closely related older Saez-Zucman-based series put 1928 above 50%, so a future historical revision is a larger YES path than a future boom in measured inequality (OWID/WID data page (); Oviedo Moguel 2020 ).

The other common mistake is to equate billionaire wealth with the top 1% wealth share. The top 1% already owns about half of the Fed's measured corporate-equity-and-mutual-fund bucket, but total wealth also includes real estate and other assets where ownership is less concentrated (FRED equities series ; FRED real-estate series ). A few trillion-dollar fortunes can move the top 0.01% a lot without making the whole top 1% own more than the bottom 99%.

Limitations

The main uncertainty is future WID methodology. WID explicitly updates its series as raw data and methods improve, and the resolution criteria count the latest published estimate by the resolution date (WID methodology ). There is no robust base rate for whether WID will revise a famous U.S. historical wealth peak by 1.33 percentage points.

The second uncertainty is regime change. The historical WID record includes the Great Depression, World War II, the postwar compression, the 1980s-2000s run-up, the global financial crisis, and the pandemic. It does not include a full AI capital-owners' boom with weak labor bargaining and persistently low capital taxation.

The third uncertainty is publication timing. The latest WID/OWID release available now runs only through 2024 despite being updated in June 2026, so a late-2030s crossing might not be published by December 31, 2039 if the lag persists (OWID/WID data page ()). That slightly lowers the forward-year path, but it does not affect the historical-revision path.
