My forecast is Any other cultivar at 49.8%, followed by Grande Naine at 26%. The catch-all leads because it includes both large unlisted incumbents and every new resistant line that could scale before 2050. The decisive question is whether disease-driven replacement produces one global standard or a patchwork in which an existing food cultivar becomes the acreage leader.
The starting data is weak. FAOSTAT measures country-level harvested area through 2024 but does not divide it among named cultivars (FAOSTAT dataset). FAO says Cavendish supplies just under half of global banana production, about 50 million tonnes a year, and that TR4 was confirmed in 21 producing countries as of January 2026 (FAO). Those figures describe a subgroup and tonnage, not the land occupied by Grande Naine, Williams or Dwarf Cavendish.
My reconstruction makes Grande Naine the probable current single-cultivar leader, but not by a safe margin. Several low-yield cooking bananas occupy far more land per tonne than export Cavendish, and some large producing countries report only local types or subgroups rather than individual clones.
The historical backbone is the replacement of Gros Michel by Cavendish. Central American exporters made much of the switch between 1957 and 1965, while Ecuador changed mainly in the late 1960s and early 1970s (CIFOR-ICRAF historical study). This shows that a clonally propagated export industry can change cultivars within a decade or two. The analogy has a limit: Cavendish was resistant to the active race and met the trade’s yield, shipping and consumer requirements. FAO later identified shelf life, appearance and flavor as reasons earlier resistant dessert bananas failed to replace Cavendish (FAO).
India gives Grande Naine its strongest base. A 2024 review estimates that Cavendish clones occupy 52% of Indian banana area, but this includes Grande Naine, Robusta, Basrai/Dwarf Cavendish and other local clones (Biosciences Biotechnology Research Asia). A January 2026 Indian government guide says Grande Naine is increasing in popularity and replacing Robusta and Shrimanti, while Dwarf Cavendish remains recommended across many states (Government of India). This supports a current lead for Grande Naine, but not claims that most Indian banana land belongs to it.
China moves probability toward the catch-all. A report quoting the national banana technology system says Baxi/Brazilian and Williams historically occupied more than 90% of Chinese banana area, while specialty cultivars rose from 5% to 22% by 2023 (China Economic Net). Baxi is normally treated as a distinct local Cavendish cultivar and would resolve as Any other cultivar, not as Grande Naine or Williams.
The Philippines shows why acreage differs from production. Its industry roadmap reports about 451,000 banana hectares in 2020: roughly 186,000 hectares of Saba, 86,000 of Cavendish, 77,000 of Latundan and 60,000 of Lakatan (Philippine Department of Agriculture). Saba and Cardaba are described as two cultivars used by the processing industry, so assigning the entire Saba category to the listed Cardava option would be wrong (PCAARRD).
Brazil also contains large unlisted candidates. Embrapa says Prata, Prata-Anã and Pacovan collectively represent about 60% of Brazilian banana area, but does not provide a reliable current split among the three individual cultivars (Embrapa). None can be treated as the whole 60%, yet Prata-Anã is plausibly within striking distance of the leading listed cultivars.
The largest correction to an export-focused forecast comes from Côte d’Ivoire. FIRCA reports 641,598 hectares of plantain in 2024 (FIRCA). A 1993 CIRAD study said the False Horn type, especially the unlisted cultivar Corne 1, represented at least 90% of Ivorian plantains (CIRAD). That share is too old to apply directly, but even substantial diversification would leave Corne 1 as a serious current contender. This evidence makes estimates of a fourfold or larger present Grande Naine lead hard to defend.
Large East African areas are less likely to produce a single winner. A Ugandan survey of 120 farmers at 24 sites found an average of 12.3 cultivars per farm and 26 per site (Experimental Agriculture). A 2026 assessment of 1,315 farmers in six Ugandan and Tanzanian districts likewise found highly localized adoption of introduced cultivars (Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT). This weakens any claim that one East African Highland banana already dominates the subgroup’s huge aggregate area.
TR4 raises the chance of replacement but does not identify the replacement. Ecuador officially confirmed its first outbreak after laboratory results received on December 15, 2025; the IPPC report published on December 19 classified it as present, not widely distributed and under official control (IPPC). Its arrival in the largest export country is a real update against susceptible Grande Naine, Williams and Dwarf Cavendish, though a confined outbreak is not a national collapse.
GCTCV-218 is the strongest listed non-GM successor. A CGIAR report says more than 10,000 Philippine hectares had been planted and the area was expanding (CGIAR). But resistance is environment-dependent: an extended Australian trial found it as susceptible as Williams, while other trials rated it intermediate or moderately resistant (Plant Biotechnology Journal). I therefore assign it 5%, well above the FHIA lines but far below a universal-replacement scenario.
QCAV-4 has stronger biological evidence. Across five crop cycles, disease incidence was 2% in QCAV-4, against 66% in Grand Nain and 84% in Williams controls, with broadly comparable agronomic performance (Plant Biotechnology Journal). Australia approved it in 2024, but the government described it as a safety net and said there was no immediate domestic demand to market it (Australian Government). GM approvals, licensing and buyer acceptance across several continents keep its forecast at 3%.
The unlisted pipeline is broader and commercially closer than a list fixed in 2026 suggests. Tropic says TR4-resistant plants were shipped for mother-plantation establishment in December 2025, targeting customer sales from 2027 (Tropic); in June 2026 it acquired Rahan Meristem, adding propagation and distribution operations across Latin America, Asia and the Middle East (Tropic). Taiwan granted plant-variety rights to the unlisted Tai-Chiao No. 9 in August 2025 (Taiwan Agriculture and Food Agency). Yelloway has also shipped breeding material to the Philippines and Indonesia for field trials against TR4 and Black Sigatoka (Yelloway). These are leading indicators, not proof of mass adoption, but 24 years leaves time for trials, multiplication and replacement.
I combined four regimes: a 44% chance that a current susceptible cultivar still leads; a 30% chance that a new unlisted resistant cultivar leads; an 8% chance that one of the listed resistant cultivars leads; and an 18% chance that an established unlisted cooking or staple cultivar leads. Within every regime, Any other cultivar was represented by the largest single unlisted candidate, never by adding their hectares together. The result is 49.8% for Any other, 26% for Grande Naine, 6% for Dwarf Cavendish, 5% for GCTCV-218, and about 3% each for Williams, QCAV-4 and Cardava.
The main mistake is to treat Cavendish’s production share as Grande Naine’s acreage share. Cavendish is a subgroup, its yields are high, and much of the world’s banana land grows lower-yield food cultivars. Côte d’Ivoire’s Corne 1, China’s Baxi, Brazil’s Prata-Anã and several West African plantains are therefore more important than export statistics suggest.
A disease-driven transition also need not create one named successor. Grande Naine can lose hundreds of thousands of hectares while Formosana, QCAV-4, Chinese selections, gene-edited lines and conventional hybrids divide the replacement area among themselves. That fragmentation favors either an already concentrated staple cultivar or one unlisted line that eventually wins the technology race.
The option probabilities are conditional on the question being resolved to a cultivar rather than annulled for lack of credible global evidence.
